What happened.NVIDIA released its complete Run:ai platform as open source software under the NVIDIA DSX AI Factory Platform. The move provides developers with free access to production GPU scheduling and cluster orchestration code.

Why it matters.Infrastructure engineers building private GPU clusters can replace proprietary workload managers with vetted Kubernetes controllers at no license cost. Teams can now carve physical GPUs into fractional slices without vendor lock-in or expensive commercial orchestration contracts.

The technical specifications:

  • Modular components: Splits the platform into four standalone projects covering GPU-aware Kubernetes scheduling, CUDA-native GPU fractioning, organizational quotas, and workload mapping.
  • Partner adoption: Cloud providers including Crusoe, Nebius, and Mirantis are embedding the scheduler into their private compute stacks.
  • Inference tooling: Pairs with Model Streamer and Grove open source libraries to accelerate model weights loading and multi-service routing.
