What happened.GitLab released emergency security updates for a maximum-severity remote code execution flaw in its regular expression compiler. The defect affects all Community and Enterprise editions across twelve years of releases.

Why it matters.Self-managed GitLab servers operate at the center of enterprise deployment pipelines and maintain direct access to proprietary source code and production credentials. Organizations running vulnerable self-hosted instances must apply the vendor maintenance releases immediately to prevent perimeter breach and lateral compromise.

The technical specifications:

  • Vulnerability mechanics: Tracked as CVE-2026-110264 with a 10.0 CVSS score, the defect stems from an integer overflow during regular expression compilation in the Org-mode processing pipeline.
  • Exploitation path: Unauthenticated remote attackers can supply malformed keyword entries to trigger out-of-bounds heap memory corruption and execute arbitrary operating system commands as the git service account.
  • Patched releases: Maintainers delivered remediations in GitLab versions 19.5.1, 19.4.3, 19.3.6, 19.2.9, 19.1.9, 19.0.10, and 18.11.13, with no viable configuration workarounds available.
