AWS integrates Step Functions workflows into Bedrock AgentCore

What happened.Amazon Web Services integrated AWS Step Functions with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, allowing autonomous AI agents to trigger serverless state machine workflows as native tools.
Why it matters.Giving language models unconstrained API access risks runaway execution loops and malformed database writes. Wrapping complex operations in deterministic state machines allows builders to safely delegate execution to agents while preserving strict architectural boundaries and rollback capabilities.
The technical specifications:
- Protocol mapping: The AgentCore Gateway provides a connector that maps Step Functions state machines into Model Context Protocol tools automatically.
- Service breadth: Agents can invoke multi-step cloud actions spanning more than 220 AWS services without requiring custom Lambda translation wrappers.
- Deterministic control: Step Functions enforces hard sequential rules, timeout boundaries, and error compensation logic around probabilistic model decisions.
- Audit tracking: Step Functions logs every agent tool invocation, input payload, and token consumption metric directly into Amazon CloudWatch.
