What happened.Computer science researchers introduced Route Anything, an open evaluation framework and theoretical model for general-purpose AI. The system dynamically routes queries across specialized text, vision, audio, coding, and robotic policies to optimize capability and cost.

Why it matters.Routing high-volume enterprise traffic to a single monolithic frontier model incurs unsustainable API costs and excessive latency for specialized domain tasks. Formulating mathematically grounded routing policies across multi-modal models enables applications to balance precision against unit economics dynamically. Technical founders architecting agent workflows should implement modular task routing to reduce operating expenditures while preserving reasoning quality.

The technical specifications:

  • Omni-modal evaluation: The authors benchmarked 25 diverse tasks across multiple modalities, recording 374,401 scored execution runs across 452 distinct model and policy candidate configurations.
  • Efficiency acceleration: Learned dynamic routers achieved an average 8.8-fold computational efficiency gain compared to monolithic base models, reaching up to 25.5-fold efficiency improvements on software engineering tasks.
  • Performance benchmarks: Dynamic policy selection outperformed the best fixed model candidate by 2.1 points in video synthesis and 1.1 points in robotics. Across evaluated pipelines, the routing approach reduced overall policy execution time by 24 percent.
